    You mean like the existing functions:

            void setMetaDataProp ( const UT_String & key,
                                   const UT_String & value ) ;

            bool getMetaDataProp ( const UT_String & key,
                                   UT_String & outProp ) const ;

            UT_StringPtrMap & getMetaData () { return m_metaDataMap ; }

    I'll implement your #define idea in 5 minutes.
