Did you installed bothe, the abiword-0.99.5 and abiword-fonts-0.99.5
packages from RPM's? If not, I think you should do it. But if you
allready installed it this way, then
what is your system LANG envirement? What fonts encodings is used? Please
check /etc/sysconfig/i18n file. If there is something like
LANG="en_US:en" then font encoding is ISO-8859-1. This means, as I
understand, that there should not be any problem. But you complain
anyway. So go farther down

If there is a string under "Modules" Section with a Label "type1" so it's
OK.

Fantastic, that means you realy have fonts! You can also check on
console/xterm by "ls -aF /usr/share/AbiSuite/fonts" to be absolutely
shure you've got them.
If my thinking is correct, you should also include a path to abiword fonts
dir in xfontserver config file et /etc/X11/fs/config. To do this, open
/etc/X11/fs/config file (first beckup this file) in your editor and check
if there is line:
"catalog= ...........,
............,
/usr/share/AbiSuite/fonts,"
If not allready there, write it down and do not forget to put a coma at
the end of line! It is important, but only if this is not a last line,
othewise left it without coma.
Save the file and close it. Restart xfs, as root by calling a command
/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs restart. Next restart AbiWord.

Don't bother yourself by this messge. First open the fonts combo box by a
click on the down arrow. You should see there all your fonts by names.
Then try to write down anything in an open document window. If you can
see letters and words, then please send a doc to a printer to check if
everything is OK.
If so, then go and click to upper menu "tools", next click "Options" (or
maybe "preferences"), and in the Options popup window, under
"scheme&preferences" card uncheck a box named "show startup warnings
about fonts". Close the popup window, quit the AbiWord. Next time you
start abiword, there chould be no more message like the one above.

Youre right, there should (must) be a file "fonts.dir", there also should
be another file called "fonts.scale". If you installed abiword and
abiword-fonts from RPM packages, as you said, so both files should
allready be there and you have nothing to do with them. But, if you
cannot see/find there those files, there must be something wrong with
your abiword installation.
Of course there is a simple way to create this files by using "ttmkfdir"
tool, but this is only needed in case you have installed your own fonts.
If what you have said is true, then these files should be there.
Here are attached two abiword docs (if you don't have them allready),
please read them troughout carefuly.
