I can't speak for AbiWord, but although html is supposed to be a "universal
language", it's nowhere close. Until such time as a single browser
(preferably Mozilla or Opera) is widely enough accepted that there truly is a
universal standard for html, it's nearly impossible and a hell of a job when
it's possible to make a page that behaves exactly the same on both Internet
Explorer and Netscape Navigator. That's not to mention such obscure browsers
as AOL's.
Do this: Make an html page (or ask someone fluent in html to do it for you)
that uses the <layer> tag constantly, along with JavaScript and CSS, if
possible. Then, open it on Netscape, Internet Explorer, StarOffice, and Lynx.
I can guarentee you, it will look different on each one.
So what is AbiWord to do? When a browser comes across a tag it doesn't
understand, it simply ignores it. Abominably bad code works on even the worst
of browsers, assuming it doesn't use browser-specific tags. But AbiWord
apparently gives up when it doesn't understand something.
I could be wrong. It could be a bug in AbiWord that keeps it from loading ANY
html pages, but I'm almost positive that even if it could, it's not really a
good idea.
How big is the page? When I need to make an AbiWord document out of an html
page, I open it in a browser, select all the text and copy it, and, depending
on my needs, either paste directly to AbiWord or right-click (in AbiWord) and
hit "paste unformatted". Both ways will probalby leave you without much
formatting to do, unless it's a very complex web page (images, links, etc.)
but it usually works for my purposes.
