I have a Debian Stable ("Woody") Linux distribution installed on a P4
computer. I am using K, not Gnome.
Woody includes Abiword 1.0.2. I am trying to upgrade to 1.99.3 using
the binary .rpm packages on SourceForge. I have converted the .rpm
packages to .deb format using "alien". The specific packages are
Abiword-clipart-1.99.3-1.i386.rpm
Abiword-embeddable-1.99.3-1.i386.rpm
Abiword-gtk-1.99.3-1.i386.rpm
Abiword-plugins-impexp-1.99.3-1.i386.rpm
Abiword-plugins-tools-1.99.3-1.i386.rpm
I do a dpkg -i for each of these. For one of the packages (forgot to
note which one) I have to specify --force-overwrite because two files
ttftool and ttfadmin.sh are also part of the 1.0.2 version. With this
detail taken care of, the install seems to be ok - no error messages.
When I execute Abiword-2.0, nothing happens.
What am I doing wrong? More generally, is there any hope of upgrading
my Woody installation to use 1.99.3?
I also tried doing an "apt-get remove" to delete the 1.0.2 version
before installing the 1.99.3 version. In that case, there are missing
llibraries when I try to execute. I am guessing (?????) that apt-get
removes some libraries, and that dpkg is not aware that those libraries
are needed because the .deb files were generated by alien; presumably
the Debian package dependencies are not in the .rpm file.
I considered upgrading to Debian Testing, then found that that Abiword
is not listed as a package in Testing.
Any advice would gratefully received by this Linux newcomer.
