clipart w/ black background

I downloaded some clipart in png form, with transparent backgrounds,
but in AbiWord, the background is black. I am using AbiWord on WinXP,
AbiWord V. 2.0.2.

The backgrounds are transparent when previewed in XP, in Safari and
Preview on my Mac (OS 10.2.8).

Is there a way I can change these, or make AbiWord recognise the
transparency?
