Can't Set Default Window Size or Font

I want the width of the default window to be about twice what AbiWord
thinks it should be, so a 10-point font will be legible at page-width
zoom. I also prefer 10-point Verdana to the 12-point Times Roman that
AbiWord wants me to use. But I can't change either the width or the
font.

I've tried setting up the window and font as I want them and then
closing AbiWord, but they aren't remembered. I've tried opening
normal.awt, setting the width and font, and saving the template, but
that doesn't work, either.

I'm using AbiWord 2.4.1 from Version Tracker on an iMac G4 running OS
10.3.1 with 768 megs of memory.

Am I up against a bug, or am I missing something? Thanks for any
thoughts or suggestions.
