I've downloaded the latest version of Abiword today (2.4.6) and I've
installed it on my laptop (Acer Aspire 5500). My laptop is running
Windows XP SP2, with all the latest updates and such.
The version of Abiword I'm using is the plain vanilla download, which
I'm guessing is the US English version. My system is also running US or
International English.
I downloaded Abiword primarily because I'm interested in alternatives to
Microsoft Word. However, much of what I would use Abiword for has to do
with Chinese. I'm living and working in China and studying Chinese on
the side. I'd make word-lists and example sentences, using both Chinese
and English.
I've no problems doing this in Word, or in Wordpad, or even Notepad for
that matter. However, when I try to type Chinese characters into a new
Abiword document, nothing but squares appear. That leads me to believe
that Abiword is having problems with Unicode support or some such thing.
Is there any workaround? What can I do to be able to type (Simplified)
Chinese into Abiword?
If it matters: I use the standard Microsoft Windows IME, and I have it
set to Microsoft Pinyin 3.0. Also, I have the 'Language for non-Unicode
programs' set to "Chinese (PRC)". This is necessary for using programs
like the Chinese non-Unicode chat program QQ. (This setting resides
under Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Advanced).
Can anybody help me?
Thanks in advance.
