Still no go.
I tried what you said but /home/romain/.AbiSuite/AbiWord.Profile keeps 
from being overwritten if I change the part related to fonts but not if 
I change something in <Scheme name="_custom_" /> or <Geometry/>. Perhaps 
my syntax related to fonts is incorrect. There is also 
/usr/local/share/abiword-2.6/system.profile to look at but not much 
infos on that one. I know there is also 
/home/romain/.AbiSuite/templates/normal.awt which is loaded each time I 
start AbiWord or /usr/local/share/abiword-2.6/templates/normal.awt if 
the latter doesn't exist.

Yeah, that would be handy. I don't know Serif PagePlus but I know 
OpenOffice and Word have this too.
